Re: Friday Night Lights | ||

For those of you in the Los Angeles area, I have a potential Kyle Chandler sighting for you. I just got in the mail the Spring newsletter for the Museum of Television and Radio and in it they mention that they will be having a FNL event on Friday, April 13th at 7 PM. They specifically mention Kyle and Connie Britton will be there to discuss the show. I have no idea if it is posted on their website yet, but the address is mtr.org, if you want to check it out. It is $25 for the event, $15 if you are a member. I am a member but I can't make it that day. I hope some of you can go to see Kyle. They may have the opportunity for pics/autographs after the session, if it follows the way they handle the Paley Fest events.

Boy I wish I lived in the LA area! That event sounds great, But I live many, many miles away. Darn!

Opinions? | ||

OK, let me preface this question with a few statements. I love Kyle Chandler (as an actor, not in a creepy, stalker kind of way). I love the exchanges between he and his wife on FNL. Love the scenes with his daughter. I loved the scenes last week when Buddy Garrity invaded the Taylor household, they were a hoot.
Here's my question. Is anyone else bothered about all the scenes in which these high school kids are throwing big underage drinking parties with few to no ramifications? Police are never called, parents are apparently hosting some of them and (unless something happened in one of the 3-4 episodes that I missed) no one is ever killed or injured in a drunk driving accident after one of these parties. And I GUARANTEE, if this were the real world, those accidents would be happening! I also couldn't believe it last week when Lyla just up and decided to skip out on the crappy time she was going through at home and drive 200 miles to see Street without her mother freaking out. She's in HIGH SCHOOL and, around here, parents would be hysterical and calling us to make either a runaway report or a missing person report. I guess my point is, it seems to me that they're writing these characters as if they're college age or older when they're supposed to be in high school. And, with the exception of The Taylors and (sometimes) Smash's Mom, the adults in the community seem to be turning a blind eye to all this. What's your opinion? Sara |

Re: Opinions? | ||

I couldn't agree with you more Sara. I also find the use of alcohol amongst the teens of FNL quite disturbing. However, this show is supposed to be depicting what life is like in a small TX town obsessed with football, right? Well, as a person who attended high school in a small TX town OBSESSED with football...I have to say, very sadly, it's pretty accurate. I wish FNL would showcase what happens when teenagers drink (ie DUI's, or maybe a horrible drunk driving car accident) so that people watching this show would see the consequences of drinking...especially when underage. Maybe then it would make people think. But sadly, when you're a great high school football player in small town TX, you're treated like a God, and then you start to think you're invincible. You also think you can do anything, because nobody says "no". It's the sad truth. Now, of course, not all football parents let their teenagers run wild. There are a few who actually do parent their kids, and do teach them right from wrong...but the football players in TX are used to celebrity-like status and usually get treated as such. It's sad, and I wish somebody would do something about it. But as long as Texans are obsessed with high school football, it's unlikely. Therefore, Friday Night Lights is pretty close to being true.
That's just my 2 cents! Sarah K. ![]() |

Re: Opinions? | ||

Yes, Sarah K, when I was in high school here in Indiana, it was the same way but the obsession was basketball instead of football. I know that keg parties have always been around but, in the last 20 years or so, the ramifications have changed. What I mean is, when I was in school if a cop found a drunk kid at a party and was friends with his parents he'd just take him home and that'd be the end of it. Or they'd just tell all the kids to go home and sleep it off. With the litigous society that we have today and the threat of an officer being sued at every turn, they legally CAN'T turn a blind eye anymore withougt being sued or facing diciplinary actions by their department. If they find kids drinking at a party the parents are called to take them home OR they're taken to a juvenile center, the kid is cited and they and their parents usually have to either make a court appearance or pay a ticket. Maybe that's why no police ever show up at these parties on FNL, the writers know they couldn't just turn a blind eye. And, maybe they WILL eventually use that as a plot line. That is, if there's a second season. Has anyone heard if it's been picked up for another season yet?

Quote: Well, they say things are different in Texas! Parents are probably honored, for goodness' sake, if their teen gets in on a party thrown by a football player. *rolling my eyes* When I was a teenager, we lived in eastern Connecticut --- where they weren't in devoted to any sport in particular. They just drank because there was nothing else to do!!! It'd certainly make for a compelling story if somebody was killed in an accident after one of those parties --- or if newcomers came to town and sued one of these Texas parents after their kid got trashed at their house. Maybe the residents of Dillon would see what their town looked like to the outside world. It does work out conveniently that most of the kids who are main characters have been written without a strong parent to keep them in line. Tim lives with his brother, Tyra's mom is like a kid herself, Matt's grandmother needs caring for herself... It makes sense that they'd be able to run a bit wild. And doesn't clutter up the canvas with too many characters. I wonder how FNL will handle it if they get a second season. Tim, Tyra, Lyla, and Smash (I think) are Seniors. Won't they be graduating from Dillon High this spring? Will the writers bring in new high-school aged characters or will they move the focus to a nearby college? Coach did get an offer from a university, didn't he? I haven't heard anything yet about a second season, but, according to somebody at TWOP, some scenes for the season finale were filmed in Dallas yesterday.

Here's a link for a TiFaux site, they're voting for the 64 hottest men on TV and it's done in bracket form. Kyle Chandler is about half way down the page with Matthew Perry, their bracket is titled The Battle of the Chandlers. Our man Kyle is down by around 60 votes but SURELY we can do something about that

Nurit, I think every episode is available for viewing online at www.nbc.com -
Have I mentioned lately how much I LOOOOOOOOOVE this show?!? It's so incredibly well-written - with such a fantastic cast... I can always count on FNL for a great night of drama! There's only one more episode left, then the season will be over. Judging from the previews, though, they've clearly planned a season finale that might make a satisfying end to the series if it doesn't get picked up for a second season. FNL has some incredible love stories. Which ones are your favorites? Eric and Tami Julie and Matt Landry and Tyra Brian and Waverly Tim and Lyla Lyla and Jason Jason and tattoo-shop-girl (Samantha?) Tim and the older woman I hope I didn't miss anyone! Here's a teaser for this week's episode: STATE 04-11-2007 8:00PM SEASON FINALE --THE STATE CHAMPIONSHIP- Its all come down to this one final game - the Dillon Panthers are gearing up for the state championship and all eyes are on Coach Taylor (Kyle Chandler). After growing speculation from everyone in town, the news finally spreads as to whether or not Coach is going to leave Dillon for his dream job at TMU (Texas Methodist University). Tami (Connie Britton), on the other hand, gets some exciting news of her own - an unexpected surprise over ten years in the making. As the season winds down, questions of struggling relationships and broken friendships are answered. More importantly, the fate of the Dillon Panthers football season comes to a thrilling and unexpected finale. |

Good news --- According to www.thefutoncritic.com, NBC has just announced that FNL has been renewed for a second season! In fact, they've ordered 22 episodes. I guess Kyle and the gang will be back to work soon... Here's a link to the breaking news:
www.thefutoncritic.com/news.aspx?id=7379 NBC is holding its Spring Upfronts presentation early next week. I would imagine that the cast of FNL will be in attendance. |

Did I see (I think I did) that Friday Night Lights was going to be on Sundays now....so I'm thinking reruns for the summer? I was in Indianapolis on business this week, and while working at my computer in the office of my hotel suite, I had the TV turned on but I wasn't paying that much attention to it, and when I looked up, it was Kyle's face and I'm sure they said Sundays.
When they changed it to Wednesday nights earlier in the season, I had to quit watching it, as I have something else happening on Wednesday nights. I just got a new computer (and high speed internet), so I can watch it now online, but even though my computer screen is now better than my TV, it's a little more relaxing sitting in my rocking chair than in an office chair.
