Emoticons - or emotes - are the little smilies that posters can insert in their messages, i.e.
There are several options if you'd like to use an emoticon (or two or three or four or more!) in your message.
1) Below the message box is a list called "Post Options." One of these options is "Use Smilies," which has a symbol like this just to its right: (?). Click on that question mark, and a small, new window will open up with a list of all emoticons and their codes. You can keep your message box window open at the same time. You can now do one of two things:
a) right click on your emoticon of choice, select "Copy" (also CTRL+C), position your cursor within your message where you'd like to add the emoticon, right click and select "Paste" (also CTRL+V)
b) "Copy" and "Paste" the keystrokes for your emoticon of choice (most keystrokes begin with a colon). When you post the message, the keystrokes will be converted into the corresponding smilie!
2) Above the message box is a generic yellow smilie. This is a button which which opens what is called the smilie editor as a stripe at the top of the message box. When you use this the first time, 42 smilies will appear in the stripe. Use the right and left arrows to make the stripe scroll through our entire set of emoticons. When you've found your emoticon of choice, position your cursor within your message where you'd like to add the emoticon and click once on the smilie. No keystrokes are necessary when you use this method, though you will see the keystroke appear in a faint box as you postion your mouse over a smilie.
Note: If you reply to another post using the "Quick Reply" box (versus clicking on "Add Reply"), the smilie editor will not be available, so you must use option 1 unless you've memorized the keystrokes for your favorite emoticons. Instead of seeing the (?) symbol to the right of "Use Smilies," you'll see the words "(Complete smilies list)." Click on this phrase for a pop-up window with our complete set of smilies.
There are a number of emoticons now available for your use, including large "Welcome" graphics and holiday smilies for New Year's, Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, the 4th of July, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, and Xmas. Check out these fun Homefront emotes!

Yuku is still working on some bugs, and one of the options I really miss from ezBoard is being able to see a small display of our smilies whenever I went to post a reply. I was able to customize these from time to time to keep the board looking seasonal and ready for whatever holiday was coming up. If I can figure out a way to make that possible again, I'll let you know!
