Elaine received a letter from Geo. Schweitzer, overseas but don't know where. Anna, Hazel, Bud, Harry, our folks went to
party. (not clear)
Elaine receives a letter from George Schweitzer from overseas, but no one knows where. This is probably due to wartime censorship. Some of Minnie's family attend a party, though Minnie doesn't say where. The rest of Minnie's entry must be somewhat unintelligible.
As Minnie penned today's entry.....

Lyle Harrington brought me flowers from Wallace' funeral. Below
zero. Wm. didn't go after Elaine for fear of car trouble.
Lyle Harrington drops by with flowers for Minnie from Wallace Bigwood's funeral, which was held on the 9th. Apparently, William's car isn't in the best running condition, as he is fearful of a breakdown while going after Elaine.
European Air War.....A heavy USAAF raid on the German industrial city of Emden kills
1,000 and makes 12,000 homeless.

10º below zero again this morn. Elaine stayed to Bessie's last
night. Finished up our last sale of cheese for 1943. Milk is
shipped for butter.
Another frigid morning! Elaine stayed overnight with her friend, Bessie. Minnie wraps up the cheese factory bookwork for 1943. A portion of the Conklin Farm's milk production is shipped out for the manufacture of butter.
War In The East.....German strength on Eastern Front is
now only 2,086,000, with 188,000 allied and satellite troops.
German casualties for 1943 were 900,000.

A zero day. School bus late. Children home. Writing and
receiving Christmas letters and cards. Wms. folks have colds.
A subfreezing "zero day" in Jefferson County. The kids are at home, due to the weather. Minnie continues to write and receive Christmas cards. She has an incredibly wide circle of friends and relatives! William's family are all sick with colds today. Not surprising, what with all the frigid weather, of late!
European Air War.....A further blitz of Berlin brings the
allied total to 18,500 tons of explosive dropped on the city.
The Holocaust.....The chief surgeon at Auschwitz
reports that 106 castration operations have been performed

20º above -- glad it is warmer. Winston Churchill has pneumonia
"somewhere in Near East." Pres. Roosevelt arrives safely
"somewhere in U.S."
The day warms to a relatively balmy 20 degrees above zero. 20 above must have felt warm, compared to the subzero weather of the past few days! The last part of Minnie's entry is concerned with the latest war news.
War In Southern Europe.....The U.S. Fifth Army captures the village
of San Pietro in central Italy after 10 days of heavy fighting.
On The Home Front.....Roosevelt reveals a plot to assassinate
him at Teheran.

Doris and Wm went shopping, brought Elaine home. She took her
piano lesson at the Conservatory. Had in Old Vienna, etc.
William and Doris go shopping, most likely in Watertown and pick up Elaine on the way back home. She had her first piano lesson at the Conservatory. She must have been quite good, in order to be accepted into a music conservatory. Minnie's last sentence here, is difficult to interpret. Therefore, the reader's guess is as good as mine.
War In The East.....The Kharkov four are sentenced to death by a Russian military court.

Blizzard came. Wm. & D- took Elaine's clothes to Grandma's so she
need not come home tonight. Brownville S.S. tree given up
because of flu.
A bone-chilling blizzard sweeps across Jefferson County. William and Doris bring Elaine's clothing to Grandma Gladwyn's where she is staying, so she won't have to brave the bad weather to come home tonight. The flu epidemic has become so severe that the Brownville Sunday School(?) has given up on its Christmas tree activity.
War In Western Europe.....Under pressure from the Allies to curtail
German espionage operations in the Irish Free State, Prime Minister
Eamon de Valera confiscates the German embassy's radio transmitter.

Mild. Beautiful day. Have a touch of grip. Heard Maj. West on "Bethlehem" and Dr. McClung on "Time." Alice LaPointe
had a stroke.
Another mild winter day dawns over Jefferson County. Minnie is under the weather with a touch of the flu. Hopefully, she won't be taken down as severely as she was, early last fall. Unable to attend church, Minnie listens to two radio broadcast sermons. Alice LaPointe, another acquaintance, suffers a stroke. These occurrences seem to come in waves in Minnie's locality.
War In The Atlantic.....Ordered to sail to the
Barents Sea and destroy the allied convoy JW-55B bound for
the Soviet port of Murmansk, the German battle-cruiser Scharnhorst
encounters a protective force of the British Home Fleet consisting
of the cruisers HMS Belfast, Duke of York, Jamaica and Norfolk.
After a fierce action, Scharnhorst is sunk, with only 36 of
her crew of 1,839 surviving.
War In The Pacific Islands.....US Marines make further landings on
New Britain, either side of Cape Gloucester.
