Supposed to heat up by the weekend, though. Kitchen sink leaking underneath - have to leave workorder with manager. Spent much of today in cleaning chores. News told of a car bombing in Iraq north of Baghdad. Four people killed - two Iraqi civilians and two US service personel. Hearing that US servicemen are involved makes me anxious about Mark. Don't know if Erika has heard of this incident. But, I'm sure that Mark is alright. Bought myself a birthday present - an M-1855 infantry forage cap with light blue welting around crown. With this, I'll be able to do Dragoon-era impressions at Ft. Tejon, as well. If there was a re-enactment group for the 1940s, I'd do that, too! Last Edited By: Derwenz 10/07/08 04:35 PM. Hazy sepia-toned sunshine in afternoon. High in mid-80sF. Continued house cleaning chores. Erika called early this morning to wish me happy birthday. She seemed in better spirits today - spoke to Mark in Iraq. Says he and his unit going on "mission" today. May the Lord keep them safely. Also received letter today from Erika. Sent list for next package, etc. Finally rec'd payment for my eBay auction. Today also 132nd anniversary of Custer's Last Stand - June 25th, 1876. Spoke to sister Ingrid today - much news about Kurt. Another hazy & sepia-toned day. Nice cool breeze. Temp in low 80sF. Got pics from Erika with her and Mark together before he was deployed to Iraq. Will post them on Homefront site. Plumber came by today to fix kitchen leak - turned out to be bad garbage disposal unit. Corroded pipe also replaced, and toilet handle fixed. Hazy but, warmer day. Karl's graduation day at Northpoint - received three achievement award certificates and a trophy. Passed CAHSEE Highschool exit exam, though he's only in 10th grade. Won't ever have to take it again. Everyone at Northpoint very attached to Karl, and will miss him. After running errands, treated Karl to lunch. Things peaceful again in Iraq; more worried about threats from Isreal that they will attack Iran this year - could start another world war. Waiting to hear from Erika. High in mid-90sF. Nice Sunday. Karl cooked breakfast this morning. Didn't attend church this morning as all three services combined into one and held outside in hot sun. Received sad news from Tammy Lauren today: family member passed away. Another is very ill. Passed message on to Beth and Sara, and friends on Homefront message board. Beth, Sara and I will send Tammy personally signed sympathy card. Erika called today - is in good spirits. Is concerned for Mark in Iraq. She heard from him yesterday - is doing well, so far. Temp in mid-90sF. This morning, took Karl to "Wallyworld" as he needed some clothing. Karl bought himself a pair of sunglasses. Picked up a few other things we needed at good prices. Surprise call from Erika this afternoon. Said she bought an orange tabby kitten from woman who runs an animal rescue shelter near Trenton. Paid $35 which includes shots & neutering. Kitten will keep her occupied when she gets bored and lonely. Mark doesn't know she bought it. Can only wonder what he'll say. Ran errands to bank & Trader Joe's. Bought special food for 4th July weekend with extra money from tax rebate. Otherwise, quiet day. Job-search results pathetic. Nothing new. Economic outlook bleak. Took my morning walk an hour earlier. Took Karl to doctor for his prescription refill, to the lab for bloodwork then, to pharmacy. Treated Karl to "Spudnuts" doughnuts. Erika called to wish us happy 4th. Sadly, had to give up her little kitten after a day, as her allergies flaired so badly that she had trouble breathing. Seemed to take it all in stride. Told me how good her Army health insurance is. Made me jealous. Erika seems to be pampered by Marks grandparents; living "life of Reilly." Mark has been drawing guard duty lately. Hazy sunshine with high clouds. Took my morning walk at 7AM. All very quiet because of holiday. Saw in western sky a brownish stratified haze that looked like a sickening myasma. Many fires now raging here in So. California. "Gap" fire in Las Padres Forest threatening many homes and camping areas. Another in San Bernadino also out of control. Big Sur also burning. Spent holiday quietly at home. Can't afford to travel as gas prices so high. Can't help wondering how Mark spent 4th of July in Iraq. Hope to hear from Erika by tomorrow or Sunday. Went to church this morning with Karl. Margaret not feeling well and stayed home. Pastor Barth preeched moving sermon on the hymn "Rock Of Ages." He preeched on the life of Augustus Toplady and the text of the hymn and the significance of the text's meter (77 77 77). Pastor also preeched on the scriptural soundness of the text and based his sermon on Numbers 20: 1-13 & Matthew 7: 24-29. After the service met an elderly couple in parking lot who were driving an old car that came right out of the Swing-era. Had long conversation with them. Their car is a pale green-colored 1951 Ford V8 convertible. Told them I felt like listening to Glenn Miller and dancing jitterbug! They are a very congenial couple. Turns out that the man also has interest in antique guns and is familiar with Springfield trapdoor rifles. Told them I'd love a ride in his car sometime. Wife enquired about Erika. On way home, stopped at Ralph's for things we forgot while shopping yesterday. Rest of day quiet. Surprisingly, Erika didn't call this weekend. Must be having good time with Mark's grandparents. Karl started summer school today. Has Math, English, and Exercise Group. Fires still raging out of control in Goleta, Big Sur, and many parts of N. California. We're supposed to have more heat, humidity and chance for thunderstorms later this week. Heard of severe bombing in Afghanistan. Haven't heard yet from Erika. Hope all is well with her. Ran errands this morning to 99 Cents Store and Ralph's Market. Registered online with another job agency. Erika called twice today. Said they are having tropical humidity and thunderstorms. One storm caught her and Mark's grandparents while they were on the road. Very frightening with hail and torrential rain. Don't think temp even reached 90sF. Partly cloudy and hazy sunshine. Threat of rain but, don't think we'll get any. Kept windows open - didn't have to run AC. Very mild for July. But, last night, severe thunderstorms over Barstow in Mojave Desert. Tornado touched down in desert. But, no damage reported. Went to Ralph's again this morning - got some good "early-bird" deals. Said he's moving to another apartment in Granada Hills with girlfriend he plans to marry. His present room mate, Dale, is in Oklahoma at present dealing with his father's passing. More thunderstorms in mountains & deserts. More flash flood warnings issued. Went to church with Karl this morning. Pastor Barth still away on white-water rafting trip with church families. Substitute pastor was dry and uninspiring. Met Ingrid at church. Told me more about Kurt. Erika called this afternoon. All going well, so far. Said Mark may be transferred stateside in about two months. He will return to his permanent duty station at Ft. Stewart in Georgia. Erika naturally excited at this prospect. Storms more localized over mountain and desert areas. Karl home sick today with flubug. Stayed in bed most of day. Registered with yet another temp-to-perm agency. Received call from them this afternoon - they said not much available in permanent job positions. Times very tough. At least, gas prices have started to fall over last three weeks. Temps in low 90sF. Microwave blew this morning, after 15 years of faithful service. Made awful buzzing sound and inside looked like an electrical storm while trying to make breakfast. Had to go to Target to buy new one. Paid $90 for 1100 watt microwave. Good thing we got that tax rebate. A narcotics bust occurred next to our building. Street full of undercover police and vehicles. Erika called today. Said Mark will be transferred stateside to permanent duty station at Ft. Stewart in Georgia. He'll be on his way home in the next three days. Said she saw soap opera magazine and read about Y&R; doesn't like direction storyline has taken. Says she misses Lynn and Tammy being part of production. I feel the same way. Saw fewer storms brewing today over desert. Anvil tops reached up from behind our local mountains, as they always do. Did banking errand this morning. Nothing else going. Internet Job search turned up no new listings. Gas prices fell another day. Only good news on economic front. Things much improved in Iraq. US handed over control of one more province to Iraqi government, as Surge is working so well. Betraeus will analyze military situation to see how much longer US presence will be needed.
