Not very cold. Karl walked to school. Took Margaret to her X-ray lab appt. at Kaiser. Barium swallow. Not the most pleasant experience for her. Tomorrow, she has two more lab precedures in the morning. Took a vacation day from work for this. After dropping Margaret off at work, drove to Post Office to mail eBay auction item to buyer in Oklahoma. Stock Market fell 155pts today. Weather cool with hazy sun. Nice breeze blowing through windows.

Highschool marquee read 59F. Clouds cleared off early to hazy sunshine. Karl walked to school. Took Margaret to Kaiser for her second mammogram and ultrasound. Test results showed that anomaly in first images turned out to be a harmless cyst. Needless to say, we are much releaved that it is nothing malignant. As Margaret had off from work today, we had lunch at Carl's Jr. An uncommon treat, these days. Stock Market up 55pts today. Gas prices rose again as oil prices rose to over $60/barrel. Miss California, Carrie Prejean, retains her crown, despite the media flap over her answer regarding same-sex marriage. Though I can't reconcile myself to her scantily-dressed photo-shoots while calling herself a Christian, I do admire her courage in standing up for her beliefs and not being ashamed of them. And, she did this despite all the hate and mean-spirited vitriol vomited up at her by certain members of the mainstream media and well-known far-left zealots. The 1st Amendment is just as much for Miss Prejean, as it is for them. Job market very poor, these days. Nothing new for a long time. At times, I wonder if I'll ever work again. I'll be 53 next month. And, the older I get, the less my chances of employment out here. Have been thinking of starting an at-home business - but what? Weather comfortable today. But, was clearing when I began my morning walk. Temp. on HS marquee read 55F. Drove Karl to school. Margaret took her bus to work. Nothing of consequence occurred today. Workers still busy on building renovations. Stock Market fell again today. Gas prices rose yet again today. Pres, Obama hopes to push his healthcare reform bill through Congress before July 31. It is my belief that this plan will hurt Americans more than it will help. Despite claims that only those earning $250K or more a year will be taxed for it, we will ALL eventually pay for it. I like the bumper sticker I saw last month while on the road: "If you think healthcare is expensive now - wait until it's 'free.'" Pres. Obama decided against releasing more photos of alleged abuse of prisoners in Abu Graeb, as he felt it would further endanger our service personnel, as well as our mission in the Middle East against terrorist organizations. Temp on HS marquee read 73F at 6:35AM. Very windy last night. Windows rattled all night. Ran errand to bank, then to ARCO for gas. Paid $2.37/gal. Gas prices up again this morning. Have been rising everyday for more than a week now. Price of gas predicted to rise to $3.00/gal. by July. Speaker Pelosi held press conference on what she may have known about water-boarding of terrorist suspects back in 2002/03. Wove a tangled web of denial as she stammered out her answers. Extremely nervous. Many of her answers seemed disengenuous, at best. Said CIA lied to her, that CIA "constantly mislead" her & others. CIA stands by their word, claiming to have proof Pelosi knew what was going on. Pelosi's poll numbers dropping. Stock Market up 46pts. New jobless claims rose higher than expected. Though, sky began to clear at 8AM. Marquee at HS read 57F. Drove Karl to school. Margaret took bus to work, though wished she could've stayed home. Ran errand to 99c Store to find some bargains. Did find some. Store very busy with elderly people. This happens when Social Security checks come. Speaker Nancy Pelosi catching heat from her statements at yesterday's press conference. She has thrown down the gauntlet to the CIA, and they have thrown it back at her. Pelosi seems a liability to her party. And, it may be a major distraction for Pres. Obama in the coming months. Stock Market down 62pts. today. GM cutting 1200 dealerships from its rolls to cut costs. This means more people thrown out of work. Job hunting - why do I even bother. There are many GM dealerships near us. Finished Churchill's "The Gathering Storm" yesterday. After arriving at Margaret's office, I walked down to Stanley's to return book to Pete. I found him at the bar with his friend Norm. He said he'd find the second volume for me. Told him I've already started on another book, but that I'd like to connect with Churchill again after finishing my current book. As it turns out, Pete and Norm are gun enthusiasts, as am I. They were very interested in my antique Springfields, etc. They own handguns and like to go shooting at the Oak Ridge Gun Club. Pete suggested I join them some day with my 1873 Colt .45 Peacemaker Army model. Problem is that I can't afford the high cost of ammo, which has gone up, due to an increased national demand. The three of us chatted for half an hour, when I realized I had to be at Margaret's office before it was quitting time. Weather warmer with hazy sunshine. Light breeze. High around 90F. But, cleared off very early. Usual shopping errand at Ralph's by us. Stayed home rest of the day. Another accident at our corner this afternoon. Mercedes side-swiped a minivan. Much hystrionic jesticulation from woman driving the Mercedes. When will these people ever learn to slow down? Everyone always in a hurry on streets around here. Cellphone usage a major distraction for drivers. I perceive the writing is on the wall; a law will be passed that any kind of cellphone will be banned while behind the wheel of a car. And this will be for the good of us all. Erika called this morning while we were preparing to go shopping. Said they had a heavy deluge of rain the other day. Spoke to Karl after Margaret and I left. Kept poor Karl on the phone for another hour after we left. Her phone call lasted a total of 2hrs and 16 min. Erika truly has the gift of gab! Ingrid called today, in answer to my message. Said she hadn't herd from Kurt since last weekend. Ingrid very stressed over her job at Melvin Ave. Elementary School. Was glad she didn't have to deal with Kurt and his traveling flea circus, as well. Karl made tacos for dinner this evening. A treat, as we haven't had tacos in quite awhile. Weather today warmer and more humid, with hazy sunshine. High over 90F.

Went to church with Karl. Ingrid sat in pew behind us. Pastor preached an excelllent sermon, as usual. Title of his sermon, "God's New Vision For Missions," based on Gospel of John 15:9-17, and Book of Acts 10:34-48. Sacrament of Holy Communion afterward. Not as many in church, as in past few Sundays. Went to Staples to buy blank DVD+Rs and jewel cases. Went afterward to Ralph's for items we forgot to purchase yesterday. Stayed home rest of day. Stomach bothering me alittle today. Bought some Jewish grape wine to help sooth it: "Take alittle wine for thy stomach's sake," said the Apostle Paul to Timothy. Seems like good advice. Gas prices on the rise yet again. Sign at corner ARCO showed $2.45/gal. That's up from the $2.37 I paid just four days ago. Word is that speculators have re-entered the market, thus driving up prices again. This is what happened last year at this time. Had to run A/C as it became stuffy and uncomfortable in our apartment by 1PM. Weather hotter today and humid with hazy sun. Wanted orange juice. Election in California today. Five propositions and one LA race for DA. All the tax hike measures to bail out Sacramento's debt predicted to fail. However, measure to cap politicians' salaries in times of financial difficulty predicted to win. Perhaps, Californians are finally waking up to the fact that we shouldn't have to bear the burden of Sacramento's fiscal irresponsibility. The way to fix our state's financial chaos, is to stop wasting money on sea otters, "green chemistry", basket weaving, and building a replica of an Indian village. These can wait till better times are upon us. Both Democrats and republicans refused to grant money to the closing of GITMO until Obama Administration can present a comprehesive plan for same. Obama Admin. today set new emission standards for autos built in US. Could hurt us more than help. Congress passed creditcard reform bill. Gas prices up again today. Price of oil now over $60/bbl. Weather very warm and humid. Partly cloudy with tropical clouds. Chance of thunderstorms over mountains and deserts. High upper 80sF. Am resisting temptation to turn on A/C.

Iran successfully fired test-missile capable of delivering a nuclear payload as far away as Eastern Europe - certainly, to Israel. Iran's president a modern-day Hitler. Calls for "destruction of jews." Sacramento realing after yesterday's defeat of all tax-raising propositions. Only one that won, is the one which caps elected official salaries when there is a budget deficit. Carmen Trutanich won City Attorney seat over Jack Weiss after a bitterly contested run-off. A defeat for LA Mayor Villaragosa, who supported Weiss. Both are business-as-usual politicians. Californians getting tired of this. Stock Market down over 52pts today. Sky became overcast when I drove Karl to school at 7:10AM. However, sun returned again by the time Margaret went to catch her bus. Threw one skull today: Went to Target to do some pre-shopping. Decided to check out Albertson's, based on a store circular received in our mailbox. Was disappointed; didn't see much. Reminded me why I stopped going there, in the first place. Pres. Obama made speech at National Archives in support of his decision to close GITMO. Even members of his own party now opposed to many of his policies on GITMO. Former VP Dick Cheney gave rebuttal speech. Landscapers planted ferns and tall, long-stemmed, broad-leafed plants. Makes the front of the building look like a cabbage patch. Temp at GHS read 57F at 6:35AM, when I saw it. Karl walked to school. Margaret caught her bus. Went to our church pantry to volunteer my services. Arrived at 9:45 and stayed till 1:00PM. Pantry not as busy today. Shower truck did not come. So, all who wanted a shower had to stand in line for the bathroom in the pantry house. Hot lunch served under the trees in front yard of the pantry house. Erika is now helping Pam with client intake, which is welcome relief for Pam. She's needed a helping hand for some time. Erika Grewal is from Germany and, while we were closed for the lunchbreak, she and I spoke long about Germany, and the many German businesses, etc., that are no longer here in LA - the restaurants, delis, radio programs and cultural events - all things of the past. Was surprised when I told her that Tibor Paul, a well-known German radio show host, moved some years ago, back to Bad Tolz in Bavaria. Dad knew him well. He once told Dad that he wanted to live out the rest of his life in Bavaria. Was asked to take lunch at the pantry when the hot lunch was served. The fare, this time, was half a large flour tortilla with rice, frijoles and cheese, and carnitas. Carnitas very good. Daughter Erika called this afternoon. Had to wait for Mark to get off work. Said it has been raining a lot in the last few days. It started out cool, but became humid in the last day. Our weather here in California today sunny and cooler. Less hazy, but occasional middle, and high clouds. Cool welcome breeze blowing through our living room windows. High in low 80sF.

Took Karl to doctor visit for his thyroid medication refill. Doctor wants bloodwork on Karl to see if his medication needs adjustment. Will take him to lab on Wednesday morning. Afterward, went to CVS Pharmacy for Karl's med refill. Had much better service, than at Target pharmacy. CVS more convenient as it is in Ralph's shopping center near us. As we came home towards noon, Margaret put off shopping till tomorrow morning. Not going to church tomorrow, as Pastor is having one service only, which means sanctuary will be literally packed to the rafters. Very hot and uncomfortable when pews are packed like a sardine can. Spoke to Ingrid for over an hour last evening concerning Kurt, who is a constant source of grief. Wish he'd grow up and learn to be self-reliant. Ingrid and I can't support him as we have our own family responsibilities. Today was his birthday; he turned 42. Terrible tragedy today as Navy commander, flying his twin-engine Cessna, crashed on approach to small airport in Nevada and was killed, along with his three young daughters. Weather partly cloudy, breezy and pleasant. High a comfortable 78F.

Cleared off by 8AM. Took Margaret shopping at Ralph's by us. As we got there by 9AM, the store was not crowded. Got some ice creme for the holiday weekend. Haven't had this treat for awhile now. Met two LA Fire Dept. personnel, a man and a woman. I offered my thanks and appreciation to them for their service to the community and for doing a job I could never do. I told them that, on this Memorial Day weekend, I felt it appropriate to remember the men and women of our fire, and police department, as well as, our Armed Forces personnel for keeping us safe. They both deeply appreciated my salute to them. I must've deeply touched the woman, as she took a tissue from her pocket and dabbed the corners of her eyes. I think it only right that we give our thanks and appreciation to to all those who protect us and keep us safe everytime we see them. They are, indeed, patriots. Stayed home rest of day. Watched movie "Luther" this afternoon. Not quite historically accurate, as many movies go. Also, it would've been nice to hear the Hymn, "Ein Feste Burg Ist Unser Gott" at least once. Ending was rather abrupt. But, I like the line Luther spoke in one scene when he said, "To think of God as an angry God, is not to think of Him rightly." This is most certainly true. If God was nothing but vengeance and anger, He wouldn't have provided a means of salvation for us. Only those who remain unrepentent and hardened in unbelief, have something to fear from Him. My mother's side of the family have been Lutheran since the 16th century. Had hamburgers for dinner this evening. Weather sunny, breezy and pleasant. High in upper 78sF.

Got up before 8AM. Remained cloudy till about 10AM. Karl made blueberry pancakes and eggs for breakfast. Listened to Chuck Cecil's "The Swingin' Years" radio program of 1940s big band/Swing era music. Imagined I was having breakfast on a morning in the 1940s. Many ceremonies around LA in honor of fallen veterans of all wars. LA Marathon also held today. Stayed home all day. Worked some more on my latest Homefront fanfic story, which I renamed "Any Bonds Today?" Later in the afternoon, watched movie "A.I." with Karl. A very fascinating movie. It always stirs emotions within me, as it is sad and poignant in parts, especially towards the end. It is for this reason that I sometimes don't like to watch it. I am, by nature very sentimental. And, though it is only fiction, I cannot help getting emotionally involved in the story. "Much fuss being made in scientific community over supposed 47 million year old fossil, dubbed "missing link" in theory of evolution. I don't think much of it, not simply because I'm a Christian, but also because scientists themselves admit that parts of this fossil have been "fabricated." To me, it is sad that some choose to worship the created, rather than the Creator. Weather sunny, breezy and comfortably cool. High in upper-70sF. Very pleasant.

Would've been too difficult for her to handle on her long bus-ride. On way back home, stopped into Ralph's to buy eggs, bacon and a shipping envelope for sending some things to Erika. Historic day as Pres. Obama nominates Sonia Soldamayor, first Hispanic female, for Supreme Court position. Obama says he picked her for her empathy, among other things. However, a Supreme Court justice must abide by their oath to make judgements based, NOT on empathy, but "irrespective of persons, rich or poor." Stock Market up 196pts today. Gas prices rose yet again. Price of oil up to $62./bbl. N. Korea fired yet another missile in defiance of UN. Dictator Kim Jong Il extremely belligerent, as are ALL dictators. Didn't walk this morning, as I overslept. Sun didn't shine through the clouds until about 10AM. Very busy morning with many skulls to throw. Took Karl to Quest lab for his bloodwork. Afterward, got gas - paid $2.57/gal. Price of gas still rising on almost daily basis. Took Karl to Office Max to pick out a poster board he needs for class project. Then, drove Karl to school. Checked him into main office. Time was 9:37AM. Went to Post Office to send off a package to Erika. Controversy building over Pres. Obama's nomination to fill Supreme Court spot - Sotomayor. I also have concerns about her. Empathy is desired in one's personal life. But, it has no place in any court of law. Grave threats and Saber-rattling coming from North Korea as Dictator Kim Jong Il now declares that N. Korea no longer feels bound by the treaty that ended the Korean War in 1953. All this as South Korea joins with US and its allies to condemn N. Korea's belligerent nuclear program, which threatens that part of the world. N. Korea says it will regard any action by S. Took my usual morning walk. Drove Karl to school as he had to be there early. Threw a skull by going to Ralph's after Margaret caught her bus to work. Took advantage of some very good advertised bargains. Nothing else going today. Job market as flat as ever. Though Washington tries to paint a rosey picture of the economy, things still look pretty bleak, to me. Stock Market up 103pts, after yesterday's drop of more than 172pts. North korea threatening to attack South Korea "without mercy" should they take part in detaining and inspection of N. Korean ships in search of materials for the construction of nuclear devices. Bankruptcy seems imminent for GM Motors. Weather same as yesterday, except that sun came out about an hour earlier than it did yesterday.

Temp on GHS marquee 60F at 6:35AM. Was going to volunteer at our church pantry. But, I felt too heady from the Benedryl I took last night for my allergies. Just another day with nothing happening. Replied to a message I received this morning from Beth on the Homefront Board. It was good to hear from her again, and to know that she's doing well. More threats again from North Korea. They are isolating themselves. USAF "sniffer" planes couldn't find evidence of N. Korea's underground nuclear test of a few days ago. Pres. Obama announced he will choose "Internet Czar" to oversee national Internet security. Just what we need - one more "czar." Obama government seems to grow larger everyday. There is also talk in the wind that Obama Administration may push for VAT (value-added tax of 25% on everything we buy) on top of all the other taxes we pay. Where are the Founding Fathers and patriots of the American Revolution when we need them? Stock Market up more than 96pts today. Weather today partly sunny and very hazy. High in low-80sF. Not as breezy. Slightly more humid.

Sun did not come out until about 10AM. Left at 9AM to do banking and take Margaret shopping at Ralph's. Erika called twice today. First, to tell us she received the package I sent. Evrything arrived undamaged. Said Mark's physical condition seems to be worsening. Doctor said he may have rarer form of arthritis. Has had to miss work because some days he's in such pain. Is trying to get sooner appt. with VA doctor. Said she and Mark are in tough money situation because he has missed workdays. They have barely enough food to get by on. Told her we'll try to send them alittle money when Margaret gets next paycheck. Things tough for us, too. Later, Erika called to speak to her brother for 45 minutes. Called Ingrid. Said she won't be in church tomorrow, as Kevin is away on Boy Scout camping trip. He is a scout master. Also complaining of flu-like symptoms. Hasn't heard from Kurt all week. Good for her!
