I can remember one day, after coming home from grocery shopping. In those days, we always bought a TV Guide at the checkout stand for the following week. I remember Margaret having just read an article in the front of the Guide, about this new series called Homefront, which was to premier that month. She then told me all about the upcoming new series that was to take place during the 1940s. Well, being that we've always been interested in that era, Margaret and I eagerly waited for the opening pilot to air. At first, I didn't have high expectations for this new series. After all, so many of these new shows turned out to be a disappointment for us. However, when we saw the Homefront pilot, we were instantly hooked! I remember how impressed I was with the level of acting, the storyline, as well as, the authenticity in which the 1940s were portrayed. I was also very pleased with the musical scoring...not at all like the Disneyland-dixieland style I was expecting. I didn't start out immediately as a fan of Tammy's role as Ginger Szabo. But, her character grew on me over time. My other faves were, and still are, Jeff & Linda Metcalf. I was also amused by "Coach Zelnick" and his grim stories to Jeff when giving advice on a certain subject. How many of those stories were true, I wondered. Maybe, "Coach" made up the stories to scare Jeff into making wise choices. Margaret and I kept watching the series until the scheduling became hard to follow. It seemed that the TV Guide was wrong half of the time. We'd have to wait till the next issue to learn the new time schedule. It was this choppy airing schedule that caused us to miss some of the episodes. Then, the show suddenly fell off our radar screens. After the episode All Good Things had aired, the show just disappeared without any further word. Needless to say, I was disappointed. I really became attached to Homefront, River Run and the lives of its storied denizens. It's one of the reasons that I resurrected River Run two centuries into the future in my first "epic-length" (as you called it, Beth  ) Homefront fanfic. Something about that show touched me and, still does.

A couple of years before Homefront began airing in 1991, I'd become big fan of movies from the 1940's thanks to American Movie Classics (remember,
back when it was a GOOD channel!) and, then, Turner Classic Movies. When I started seeing commercials for Homefront on ABC, I was immediately interested and
bought the Fall Preview TV Guide. The series looked pretty good so I was looking forward to the premier. After it aired, I was just amazed. As Steve said, I
was just blown away by the acting. The final scenes with Linda Metcalf, crumpled in a heap and sobbing on the Sloans doorstep, and then the very end when
Linda, Ginger and Gina are in Brandsteatters, stayed with me the entire week. I ALSO remember being struck by the whole look of the show and it's
authenticity. Watching movies from the 40's, where everything is in black and white, you don't get a complete feel of how people looked and dressed
back then. But, seeing Homefront in all it's glorious color, and seeing the vividness of the clothes and hats, the make up and jewelry, I just remember
thinking that I could suddenly imagine how my mother or aunt or grandmother would have looked then.
Boy, when this show premiered back in 91, I had no idea what a part of my life it would become! I wonder if kids in their 20's nowadays will feel that way about Survivor in 15 years!?!?!

I watched the premiere of Homefront purely by accident. It was my freshman year in college - my first semester - and I must have been taking a break from studying. I think Roseanne was on beforehand, which I watched most Tuesday nights, and then they led right into Homefront, which was a 90-minute episode that first time. I remember being caught up in the drama from the beginning and the dramatic cliffhanger at the end - with Linda learning of Mike's death just before finding out that Gina was pregnant --- I just had to watch it the next week and find out what happened!!! I do remember having seen some of the print ads for Homefront during the summer before it premiered and thinking it looked exciting. They usually do - and then fail to deliver. What a difference with this series! I also enjoyed big band music, so I was a sucker right away for the soundtrack. I was so enamoured of Homefront that I didn't even want to watch it with anyone else in the room - lest they disturb my concentration, I guess! I would watch it alone and then, when I finally started taping it, rewatch the tape later that week with my mom or dad or my little sister.

First of all...Hi, Sara!! It's nice to see you again!

I'd always had a passing interest in movies of the '30 and '40s. But, Homefront turned it into a real passion. Yeah, I remember when AMC was, indeed, a good channel. When they aired the series Remember WENN, it was for me, an extension of Homefront. Now, the powers that be at AMC would rather cut off their right arms, than to rerun the show. But, Homefront rekindled my interest in such "golden age" movie icons as, Ginger Rogers, Ann Miller, Esther Williams, Myrna Loy, Rita Hayworth, Lucille Ball, Vera Ellen, James Stewart, Cary Grant....to name a few. When we watched that pilot episode of Homefront, I had no idea of just how much it would impact my life in later years and that it would lead to this terrific Homefront message board, which would ultimately lead to something beyond my wildest "Homefront dreams!" And you, Sara and Beth, know all about that! Steve

And thanks so much for sharing your sweet tribute blog to Homefront! You were so young when it premiered... I wonder how many other 4th graders were tuning in! I'd be interested to know if Homefront seemed any different to you when you watched it again recently. Were there storylines or characters that didn't have much interest to you 15 years ago that were more appealing to you in your mid-20s - and vice versa. Man, when I was in the 4th grade, I was still watching things like Who's the Boss? and Family Ties and Little House on the Prairie (when it was primetime!)... Thanks again for linking us to your blog. By the way, the Anne/Gilbert comparison rocks!

Jeff and Ginger were ALWAYS my favorite part of the show the first time around, and I found them every bit as endearing and funny and wonderful when I rewatched after fifteen years! (I never had TVLand or Good Life, so the last time I saw the show was when it originally aired.) Also, Jeff and Ginger seemed so much older when I was a kid...I was looking at Kyle and Tammy going, "WOW! They are children!" There were SO many random lines and scenes I completely remembered. I still love, "Would you marry me instead of him???" And I DID have a few friends in my fifth grade class that also started watching since I talked about it so much
