At the beginning of the series he was supposed to be this shy, reserved guy (other than the fact that he was playing kissy face with his brother's fiancee!) and, with the exception of Gina, he ended up dating every woman on the show who was under 40!!!!

Mutt really did get around, didn't he! :romance

Jeff was so young when he started dating Ginger. I know - a different place and a different time - but he was only 21!!! When I think about how much better I knew myself at 30... I gasp in horror at the thought of what would've happened if I had married the guy I was dating when I was 21! :sob It was probably a good thing that Jeff - and Ginger - had the chance to get to know themselves a bit outside of their relationship before settling down.

Ginger, Judy, and Caroline were all "the older woman" when it came to their interaction with Jeff. They all offered him a bit of the mystique and experience that came along with being "the older woman." Both Judy and Caroline gave Jeff the opportunity to - sample, if you will - the things he might have missed sometimes in Ginger. Judy was a kindred spirit when it came to baseball and was sophisticated and self-assured. And Caroline didn't have that driving professional ambition of Ginger's --- or the worries about venial and mortal sins!

I think it'd probably be healthier for Jeff & Ginger's marriage in the long run that he got the chance beforehand to prove to himself that the grass is not always greener.
